Crafting Legacy in Stone: Dunhouse Quarry and The Rising

Dunhouse Quarry is proud to have played a key role in The Rising, an ambitious redevelopment project at Raby Castle, Park, and Gardens. Designed to share the estate’s remarkable history, enhance visitor experiences, and support long term conservation, The Rising represents the most significant transformation of the 14th-century family estate in generations.

Named after the 1569 Rising of the North, the project combines sensitive restoration with innovative new design, including the remodelling of the historic Walled Garden and the creation of striking new visitor facilities.

Working in partnership with Fairway Contracts Ltd, Dunhouse Quarry supplied locally sourced Shirehill stone for several prominent features across the site in the new visitor car park, Shirehill stone setts form the paths and walkways, providing a durable and timeless surface that leads guests seamlessly towards the Round House. This striking circular building, inspired by a traditional field barn in Staindrop, now serves as the ticketing and information centre at the heart of The Rising.

Radiating from the Round House, three flights of stone steps crafted entirely from Shirehill stone guide visitors into different areas of the gardens, blending natural beauty with expert stonework.

Through the use of local materials and skilled craftsmanship, Dunhouse Quarry has helped ensure that The Rising not only enhances the visitor experience but also respects the character and heritage of this historic estate.
